The Renault Duo: A Small Package with a Grand Design

This Tandem City Electric Vehicle is Perfect For a Range of Riders!

Expanding the offerings of quadricycles and micro-mobility is the Renault Duo, the tandem city electric vehicle that will be available by the end of 2023! This versatile and stylish EV is perfect for bikers, minimalists, and outdoor enthusiasts. With two iterations to choose from — one with a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) that can be driven without a driving permit in some countries from the age of 14, and another that tops out at 80 km/h (~50 mph) and will require a Class B license — the Renault Duo has something for everyone. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting new EV!

It's first important to say the Mobilize Duo is a direct competitor to the “My AMI” I had written about in a previous article.

Keeping consistent with the My Ami, the Mobilize Duo maintains its small size at 2.43 meters long, 1.30 meters wide, and 1.46 meters high. This translates into one small but very agile vehicle able to get into and out of tight spaces. Parking will not be an issue as three of these will be able to fit into one standard-size parking space.

Differing from the Ami is the seating style of the Duo. The passenger is located directly behind the driver as opposed to directly adjacent.

Not unlike the “Ami,” the 45 km/h (28 mph) version is perfect for those who want to zip around town without having to worry about a driving permit, while the 80 km/h (~50 mph) version is perfect for those who want to hit the open road! Both versions have plenty of storage space to bring all your gear with you on your adventures. And with a range of up to 140 km (87 miles) on a single charge, you’ll never have to worry about being stranded!

The orange-colored dash really drives home the vehicle's minimalist design with a well-thought-out and simplistic approach. The instrument display is directly in the middle, the gear selection to the left, and the speaker and phone dock to the right. It is even equipped with a USB-C charging port!

The subscription service is the largest difference between the “Ami” offering and Renaults. The Ami can be bought outright, while the Duo is part of a subscription/lease service. As part of the subscription package, you can expect to have all warranty and maintenance services included. Typical vehicle insurance will also come with the general subscription.

Additional Details:

  • Duo has an open and connected electronic architecture that will enable upgradable connected services.

  • There will be an optional cargo version called “Bento,” and it will be available for professional customers starting in 2024.

  • 50% of the Duo will be comprised of recycled materials, and the finished product will be 95% recyclable.

Conclusion: The Duo is a welcome addition to the quadricycle market. It won’t be long before we see more and more of these “littering” our streets as they are serious head-tuners. Expect ride sharers, company fleets, and general urban passengers to flock to these exciting rides. Whether you’re looking for an easy way to get around town or an exciting new adventure on the open road, the Renault Duo is a perfect choice!
