One of the main reasons for this article was a recent discussion with a friend of mine regarding EV battery safety. There isn't a day when we don't hear of some spontaneously combusting EV making the news. Sometimes, just how energy-dense and dangerous these batteries are can be forgotten. The argument can be made that EV fires aren't more prevalent than conventional ICE (internal combustion engine) models, but they can be more devastating when they happen, as you can see here:
This is where BYD's Blade battery's innovative design comes in. Unlike traditional EV batteries, which consist of many individual cylindrical cells, the Blade battery uses a single-cell format. This design allows for a greater packing density, resulting in a higher energy capacity per unit volume. The single-cell design also allows for a more straightforward, robust battery pack, reducing the risk of failure.
The Blade battery's reduced risk of failure is a significant advantage over traditional EV batteries. The battery comprises lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, less prone to heat buildup and thermal runaway. So, what is thermal runaway? As defined by EV Firesafe:
All EV traction battery fires start with thermal runaway. Thermal runaway occurs when a battery cell short circuits & starts to heat up uncontrollably. Lithium ion batteries contain a large amount of energy in a very small space. Under normal operation, they rapidly convert chemical energy to electrical energy.

BYD has performed rigorous safety tests on the Blade battery, including the mountain of all testing, the nail penetration test. The Drive Over Test (Above) saw a 46-ton fully loaded heavy-duty truck drive over the Blade Battery pack. The important takeaway is the battery successfully passed without leakage, deformation, or smoke. Even more surprising, the Blade battery was intact and ready to be used in an EV. In other words, these batteries were built to withstand tanks.
Another benefit of the Blade battery is its fast charging capabilities. With a 50% charge taking only 30 minutes, the Blade battery is a game-changer regarding charging time. This is made possible by the battery's ability to handle high charging currents without overheating. The Blade battery also has a longer cycle life, meaning it can go through more charge and discharge cycles before losing capacity. This makes it ideal for heavy electric vehicles like buses, trucks, and forklifts.
It's not all sunshine with the Blade battery, as it does have one glaring disadvantage, but doesn't everything? I am referring to the Blade's characteristics at low temperatures. This is an inherent problem with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries at lower temperatures. The battery power will be significantly reduced in cold winter conditions. If you live in a colder region, you could be making more trips to the nearest quick charger.
But what about the cost? While the Blade battery may seem like an expensive option, it's important to note that the reduced risk of failure and longer cycle life can make it a more cost-effective option in the long run. Additionally, the Blade battery's high packing density requires fewer cells, which can help offset the initial cost. Plus, with more EV manufacturers moving towards the Blade battery, we can expect prices to decrease as production ramps. Even Tesla has opted to jump on the bandwagon.
